Why doesn't the chat content load?

What does this cover exactly?
It can sometimes be the case that, when switching between the general and one-to-one chat areas or when switchning between one-to-one chat rooms, the text at the top of the conversation panel remains as "Loading general chat information. Please wait . . ." or "Loading one-to-one chat information. Please wait . . ." but doesn't actually load the information.

Why does this happen?
This seems to be an unavoidable consequence of making such a smooth flowing chat system that automatically updates without having to reload the page.

A number of background processes constantly update the conversation and legend and if either of these overlap with a requestto switch between chat areas the chat system can very occasionally get confused.

How can this be overcome?
To compensate for this eccentricity, the room switching process will automatically retry after 10 seconds if it happens to get stuck.

In most cases all that is needed is to patiently wait.

In other cases where it gets well and truly stuck, simply re-selecting the previous link should get things going. We have never come across a situation where this fails, however it if does simply reload the page.

How can this be avoided?
As far as we know, there is no way of avoiding this.
