How do I successfully upload a photo?

Uploading a photo may not always be as simple as it seems. There are range of different formats for the files that store photos, and these files can dramatically vary in size.

If you find that you can't upload a photo, either for your profile or album, we have a few pointers that may be able to help.

  1. Check the size of the file you are trying to upload We allow files up to 4 megabytes in size to be uploaded. This is much more than you would expect for the filesize of photos from most digital cameras, although this does depend on the format of the photo file. If in doubt, find the file on your computer and see how large it is. The filesize is most likely to be represented in kilobytes (KB), for example 328K, or in megabytes (MB), for example 1.2MB. One MB is equal to 1024KB.
  2. Check the dimensions of the photo you are trying to upload Computer images are made of pixels (each being a small single-coloured square), and the dimensions state the width and height in pixels. All uploaded photos are passed onto our image editor so that you can effortlessly change the width and height to fit your pages. For this process, we allow images upto 2000 pixels wide by 1500 pixels high. If you are using a digital camera, this is roughly the equivalent of a 3 megapixel photo.
  3. Check the format of the file you are trying to upload We allow the following format of photo file to be uploaded:
    • JPEG (with filenames ending in .jpg, .jpeg or .jpe)
    • GIF (with filenames ending in .gif)
    • PNG (with filenames ending in .png)
If the filename of your photo ends with .jpg, .jpeg, .jpe, .gif or .png, there's a fair chance that its in an allowed format.
If the photo you have is not in one of the above formats, for example Windows BMP format (with a filename ending with .bmp) or TIFF format (with a filename ending in .tif or .tiff, sometimes a popular format for scanners), you would need to convert the photo to one of the above listed formats. We recommend JPEG as this will result in a smaller file for you to upload. Unfortunately we can't help you with converting your photo into an allowed format, as this is a huge topic to discuss and depends greatly on your level of computer knowledge and the type of computer you are using. If you need assisstance in converting your photo to an allowed format, the best option would be to ask someone you think would know. Or, just use a search website using search terms such as "convert bmp to jpg"
