How your sign-in details are stored and what is stored
What does this cover?
If you choose the option Remember my sign-in details for the next two weeks
when signing in, your sign in details, as you might expect, will be remembered for two weeks
so that you won't need to enter them each time you visit.
This explains how your sign in details are remembered and what information of yours is stored.
What information is stored?
When you successfully sign in, whatever details you entered to do so will be stored on your
computer. This covers your email address or username, depending on which of these two you
entered, and your password.
How is this information stored?
Your sign in details are stored on your computer in what is called a cookie. This is
essentially a file on your computer.
Under normal circumstances there is no real risk in doing so as the cookie file can only legitimately be accessed by the website that created it and so is not accessible to the Internet as a whole.
However there is nothing to stop someone with the right skills and knowledge finding a cookie file and reading the information stored within it, neither is it possible to prevent a program running on your computer from doing the same.
Our recommendation
If the computer you use to access the Cup of Sugar website is accessible either only by you or
by yourself and others you trust there should be no real problem with having your Cup of Sugar
sign in details stored in a cookie on your computer.
If the computer you use is publicly accessible, for example an Intenet cafe, library or place of work, we recommend that you don't choose to have your sign in details remembered as it would be very likely that anyone who used the computer would then be able to sign in to your Cup of Sugar account.
In all cases please remember that it is your responsibility to maintain the security of your Cup of Sugar username and password. This means not giving your Cup of Sugar details to anyone else and ensuring that your details are not left somewhere publicly accessible. The method utilised by the Cup of Sugar website to remember your sign in details, that is storing the information in a cookie on your computer, is acceptable if you are the only person using the computer but in no cases is it secure. If you choose to have your sign in details remembered as a convenience to you, you do so at your own risk.
If you believe that your Cup of Sugar account has been compromised by someone else acquiring your details please contact alerts@cupofsugar.com immediately.
